Mystery Beer #1 (Solved by drbj)

Way back in the year 1919 beer was once banned. Barrels of beer were confiscated and broken from one end of this great country to the other. Breweries either had to find another way to survive in the market place, such as producing ice tea, root beer and other beverages, or they went belly up. Drinking a beer was against the law, and became an act of protest against those in power. Each toast was a citizen's demand to enjoy life's simple pleasures. Prohibition lasted all the way through the roaring twenties, and when beer became legal again fourteen years later, the taste of beer was never the same again, as it was before. That is until just a few years ago when a clean up worker accidentally discovered an old beer recipe in the lost basement archives of an old brewery dating back before the time of prohibition. On the cover of the very old dusty file, it read "batch nineteen" in old style writing, which was inspired by the last batches of beer brewed before the year 1919. This particular type of beer was inspired by an authentic pre-prohibition recipe. It was bold, hoppy, and a surprisingly balanced lager, which derived it's bold taste from a rare combination of hops that included hersbrucker and strisselspalt. The hersbrucker hops provide herbal notes, and strisselspalt hops deliver notes of black currant. This is the only major brewing company in the United States of America that uses this particular combination today in modern times. Now you all are probably wondering just what is the name of this brewing company that produces this defiantly bold beer. Well to be perfectly honest with you, I'm not going to tell just yet. However I will give you all some time to guess the correct name of this famous brewing company below, before I reveal to you the correct answer. Good Luck, and the winner will get a big at-ta-boy!

The correct answer is MillerCoors brewing company as correctly guessed by drbj ! These two big American brewers formed a joint venture in 2007. Miller brewing company was established in 1855, and has 6 breweries around the country. They are located in Fort Worth, Texas; Irwindale, California; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Eden, North Carolina; Albany, Georgia; and Trenton, Ohio. Coors was established in 1873, and has two breweries, which are located in Golden, Colorado and Shanendoah, Virginia. These 8 breweries are actually under the umbrella of SAB (South African Breweries), which is headquartered in London, England. SAB has control of about 200 breweries in countries all around the world. Famous breweries like Foster's, Castle, Grolsch, Peroni, and Pilsner Urquell to name just a few. I realize that Coors was named in the very first comment of this hub, however that was only half right, and as you all can now see this was actually a rather complicated answer in the end. I want to thank you all for visiting this hub.

Mystery Beer #2 (Solved by drbj)

Irish people are passionate about many things, and one of them is beer. This beer came into existence back in 1864 and was pioneered as one of the first red beers at G.H. Lett & Co, the oldest independent brewery in Ireland. People often ask about that beautiful ruby color, and how does it come about. They are told that it's the perfected special art of slow roasting of the caramel malts that creates a ruby red beer known for it's remarkable color, and smoother bold taste. The slower the roasting, then the richer the color and the smoother the flavor. That's why they roast the malts for more than half a day. They are very proud of the fact that something that started back in Ireland in the 1860's carries on here in the United States of America today. There are so many places where the past has all but disappeared. Isn't it good to know that some traditions live on an ocean away. They might not deliver the barrels of beer by horse and dray anymore, but it's still crafted with care based on the recipe from back in the seventeenth century. Now it's your turn. What is the name of this ruby red colored beer? (The correct answer is George Killians Irish Red Premium Lager.)

I know that Coors is doing a Coors Batch 19 Pre-Prohibition Style Lager...but you say it is not Coors so how about...Hallertauer Hersbrucker?

Cogerson - It's not Hallertauer or Hersbrucker either.

AliciaC 14 months ago

Mystery beer #2 - Coors (of Colorado) markets Killian's Irish Red in the U.S. (originally a ruby-colored ale).

Mystery beer #3 - The beer that made Milwaukee famous is Schlitz beer.

For info about beer see my hub: "Tribute to Beer - an Amazing Beverage."

TheHoleStory 12 months ago

Very good drbj, I knew you could get it & wouldn't let me down. The names of the beer were correct - George Killians Irish Red Premium Lager, and good ole Schlitz. And since I ask only for the name of the beer I must award you the two virtual at-ta-boy's. However MillerCoors brews both of these beers at other brewerys outside Colorado as well. Great job & I will check out this hub of yours.

drbj 12 months ago

Mystery Beer #4 in the specially designed vortex bottle is Miller Lite (MillerCoors).

Mytery Beer #5 in the bottle with the medieval emblem for steel is Steel Reserve 211 High Gravity (MillerCoors).

Now here's a 3-part question for you, T.H.S. What is the most expensive beer in the world? Where can you buy it? How much does it cost?

TheHoleStory 12 months ago

Correct again drbj, and I believe you can find the answer to your question above. Thank you so much for all of your help here, and please note the change to this hub's title! Have a nice day!

drbj 12 months ago

Now that's funny, THS - love the new hub title!

N.E. Wright 11 months ago

After doing some extensive research on this topic, I believe I have solved your mystery beer questions. The answers are as follows; #6 D.G. Yuengling & Son (originally Eagle brewery) which was established in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in the year 1829. #7 Jacob Leinenkugel brewing company. #8 Coors Light. #9 Schaefer Beer. #10 Ice House Beer. Looks like now there's a two way tie for 1st place in this hub for that At-a-boy. What's next?

TheHoleStory 11 months ago

It took some time for the last 5 questions to be correctly answered, but we do have a winner in our midst now. Congratulations N.E. Wright on getting all five answers for all five questions correct. Now it appears as though there is a two-way tie between both drbj and N.E. Wright for having answered five questions each correctly. So that means that I will just have to add more questions to break this historical tie. Congratulations again to N.E. Wright and good luck to all who try!

drbj 11 months ago

Hi, THS, I just retrned from a quick weekend trip to Sarasota (FL) and discovered these additional 'beery' questions awaiting solutions.

Here are my answers: Mystery Beer #11 - the light beer with only 64 calories and 2.4 carbs is MGD Light - Miller Genuine Draft Light.

Mystery Beer #12 - the beer established in Milwaukee in 1844, red, white and blue bottle/can is Pabst Blue Ribbon from the Pabst Brewing Co.

Mystery Beer #13 - the beer from Australia is Foster's - distributed in the U.S. by SAB Miller, a Foster's licensee.

Mystery Beer #14 - the champagne of beers is none other than Miller High Life disributed by Miller Brewing Co.

The MOST expensive beer - you were close with Nail Ale - is not Nail but Vielle Bon Secours which sells for $1,000 a bottle or $78 pint. And it can be purchased from only one bar, the Bierdrome in London, England.

TheHoleStory 11 months ago

My hat is off to you again drbj. There was one slight little problem, But I'm going to give you the much deserved at-ta-boy for all of your noted hard work. Question #11 actually is - Miller Genuine Draft 64 light beer. You see there is also a Miller Genuine Draft light beer as well. These breweries don't miss a thing these days. Now as far as Vielle Bon Secours beer goes, in this economy one would be much better off buying them selve a keg of beer. Do you know how many kegs of beer a person could buy for a $1,000? I'm impressed once again with your knowledge of the beer industry, and I'm going to have to start coming up with harder questions for you.

drbj 9 months ago

Hi, THStory, sorry for the delay. With reference to Question #15, the Miller Coors home draft system was originally tested with Miller Lite (which was in a slump at the time)and Coors Light(which had been gaining market share). But you already know that! :)

TheHoleStory 9 months ago

I knew you would get around to answering question #15 sooner or later drbj. Even though it took you a whole 2 months. Be sure to stay tuned for the next question coming soon to a hub near you.

drbj 8 months ago

Hi, THS - Darned if I didn't think I had already answered #16. The correct answer is: (drum roll, please) - Ballantine Ale from the Papst Brewing Company, Illinois, U.S.A. Sorry about the delay.

drbj 6 months ago

Hey, THS - re mystery beer #17, I believe you are referring to Lone Star Beer with the star on the label which was born and bred in Texas, 1845. Distributed by Pabst Brewing Company. 'Remember the Alamo' appears on the 6-pack carton.

TheHoleStory 6 months ago

#17 is correct again drbj :)

peepingtomb 5 months ago

What a great hub. I'm sorry to have missed out on solving a few.

peepingtomb 5 months ago

#18 is Root Beer? I hope to make my own some day.

Mystery beer #19, the Grand Cru, costs $7.99 at a Total Wine in SW FL.

TheHoleStory 4 months ago

You are correct Peepingtomb, and $7.99 a bottle is a very good retail price. The price ranges between $7.99 to $13.99 a bottle, and I've even heard of the price topping the scales at $20.00 a bottle or $210.00 for a case of 12 bottles, just like the one pictured in the question above. Here's a link for more prices - http://www.artisanwinedepot.com/PhotoGallery.asp?P

fatdaddy 4 months ago

#20 is Stroh's.

TheHoleStory 4 months ago

You are correct fatdaddy, the correct answer to mystery beer question #20 is Stroh's beer. In the late 1990's the fire brewing of the beer was done with a small propane flame at the bottom of the brewing tank. This was done just so that they could legally continue to advertise the beer as fire brewed. Today that has all been done away with.

drbj 4 months ago

Answer to Mystery Beer #21 - Miller Lite. The Vortex bottle was introduced for Miller Lite by MillerCoors. The bottle has specially designed grooves inside the neck that “create a vortex as you’re pouring the beer.” Supposed to improve the taste. Seems like a gimmick to me.

TheHoleStory 4 months ago

I've been wondering where you have been drbj. Two people has out guessed you in your absence. But very good, the answer was lite beer from Miller. And yes I would say it's a gimmick as well, but it sells beer doesn't it?

Mystery Beer #22 is Rolling Rock originally brewed at the Latrobe Brewing Company in Pennsylvania. In May, 2006, Anheuser-Busch purchased the Rolling Rock and Rolling Rock Green Light brands. There are a number of theories about what the number 33 on the label represents.

Mystery Beer #23 is Carling Black Label Beer and the flat top can was brewed by Carling Brewing Co., Cleveland, Ohio.

Mystery Beer 24 is "2 degree below ale" and it is brewed at New Belgium Brewery, Fort Collins, Colorado.

TheHoleStory 3 months ago

drbj, you got 2 out of 3 correct this time. Question #22 is Rolling Rock which was originally brewed at the Latrobe Brewing Company in Pennsylvania. Question #24 is New belgium brewing company out of Fort Collins, Colorado. However you are about 400 miles off on where mystery beer #23 was brewed and filled at. Try again!

Excellently done article! Did you know that Carling Black Label was the #1 choice of Muhlenberg Bad Beer Nights in the early '70s? Yepper...how did I know? Been there, drunk that.

Excellent hub for human beer anoraks. Voted up!

Mystery beer #25 is Keystone. The marketing slogan is "Always Smooth, Even When You're Not." The spokesperson is an actor who uses the name of Keith Stone. Figures.

drbj 3 months ago

Here's another stab at answering beer question #23: Today Black Label is brewed by Miller breweries under contract to Pabst at Eden, NC and Trenton, OH.

TheHoleStory 3 months ago

Thank you ElizaDoole for voting my beer hub up! drbj you got Keystone correct, however you are still way off on Mystery question #23. I'll give you another hint - The only thing you have correct about Can-B is that you are on the correct coast of the United States. Wrong states though, try again.

TheHoleStory 3 months ago

I've added two more photos of the Black Label Can-B, in an attempt to help solve this question, and get it off the books once and for all. Good Luck!

My last try, THS. How about Baltimore, MD as the brewery for Carling Black Label in the 60s? This beer has been brewed over time in many of the major U.S. cities as well as in the U.K. and South Africa. Chasing it down requires research above and beyond.

TheHoleStory 3 months ago

Congratulations drbj, It only took you 8 days to figure out mystery beer question #23. Baltimore, Maryland is the correct answer. On the side of the Black Label can it says in alphabetical order - "Plants at Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.; Belleville, Ill.; Cleveland, O.; Fort Worth, Tex.; Frankenmuth, Mich.; Natick, Mass.; Tacoma, Wash.; Contents 12 Fl. Ozs." Given that the tax stamp on the bottom of the can is from the Commonwealth of Virginia, then Baltimore, Maryland is the only logical location by proximity for the brewery's distribution network. Your getting slower in your old age drbj & now I can finally take this question off of the books :)

TheHoleStory 3 months ago

For a minute there drbj, I thought that I was going to have to list the city of Baltimore's sports teams as a clue for you in mystery beer question #23. I'm glad to see that it didn't have to come to all of that. :)

Hi! The Hole Story I love this Hub!!!! Angie

TheHoleStory 2 months ago

Thanks Angie, Do you want to give mystery beer question #26 or #27 a try?

drbj 2 months ago

Mystery beers #26: the malt liquor represented by the blue bull logo is Blue Bull brewed by Schlitz Malt Liquor. Zane, the one-ton Brahma bull that was featured in TV ads was really a eunuch.

The angry-looking green and brown hornet that some called a bee is featured on the label of Mickey's fine malt liquor.

Mystery beer #27 that features photos of wild life was brewed by Schmidt premium beer, later G. Heilman Brewing Co./Pabst Brewing Co. The slogan: "Beer that grew with the Great Midwest" is actually a misnomer since it was brewed in the MIDWEST - Minnesota!

TheHoleStory 2 months ago

You are correct once again drbj, and I was starting to wonder if you got lost on your way here.

drbj 2 months ago

I would be happy to try to answer your mystery beer questions sooner, ths, but as your follower I am only notified when you publish a NEW hub but not when you revise one already published. Also - in the slogan above, I meant to write 'Great Northwest' but it came out 'Great Midwest' instead. An Oops! moment.

TheHoleStory 2 months ago

You know I'm just playing dbrj, and I want to congratulate you on holding the lead at 19 correct questions answered. There will surly be more questions to follow, as soon as I can figure out how to make more up :)

TheHoleStory, great Hub! I'll e-mail it to my beer snob sons to see if they can identify the mystery beers.

For Mystery Beer #1, I would have guessed, Straub, my hometown brewery. Although the beer is not hoppy, it is a great lager brewed with the same recipe for over 130 years. It is all natural, made with 4 ingredients, no sugar or preservatives. (The locals claim it is ok for diabetics). Check out my hub on the brewery.

Okay, ths - here are the answers to your latest mystery beer questions #28, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33.

Question #28 - the punch top can - Miller Coors Miller Lite

Question #29 - Olde Frothingslosh beer - Pittsburgh Brewing which advertised it as the 'pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom. Marsha Phillips was the name of the woman who was the model for Miss Olde Froshingslosh.

Question #30 - MillerCoors Miller High Life welcoming veterans back to the HIGH life.

Question #31 - Billy Beer was produced by Falls City Brewing Company (based in Louisville, KY), Cold Spring Brewing, West End Brewing and Pearl Brewing Co.

Question #32 - Anheuser-Busch InBev brews Bud Light Platinum.

Question #33 - Boulevard Brewing Co. is located in Kansas City, Missouri. You might be interested to know that one of their products is Chocolate Ale. True!

TheHoleStory 2 weeks ago

I believe drbj that you now hold the indisputable record for the longest answer anywhere on the Hub Pages. Miller High Life Light is also welcoming back our veterans, but that's close enough for me since I didn't ask for the name of the beers. Congratulations drbj on getting all six out of six questions correct.

These questions have been sitting around on this hub collecting dust for a while, and I'm glad you finally made it back to put them to rest. Now all that you have left to do is guess the name of the birthday cake on the "Mystery Cake" hub. Take care, and I hope to see you there.

drbj 6 days ago

Hi, ths. The answer to Mystery Beer question #34 - a Belgian style wheat ale - is Blue Moon brewed by the Blue Moon Brewing Company, Golden, Colorado.

TheHoleStory 6 days ago

You are correct once again drbj, except blue Moon is brewed by the MillerCoors brewing company, and not the Blue Moon brewing company. I'll be more than happy to give that one to you. The only thing left now is for you to guess the name of that cake in the mystery cake hub. It's really not as hard as everyone has made it out to be.
